Congress leader Jitin Prasada joins the BJP ahead of 2022 Uttar Pradesh elections

In a set back to the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, former Union minister and two-time Congress MP Jitin Prasada joined the Bharatiya Janata Party Wednesday in the presence of party leader and Union Minister Piyush Goyal. Ahead of his induction, Prasada visited Goyal at the latter’s residence in the national capital.

With Assembly elections due next year in Uttar Pradesh, and the BJP on the backfoot following criticism over its Covid management, Prasada’s induction could deal a body blow to the Congress’ chances.

Prasada, who had won from Shahjahanpur and Dhaurahra Lok Sabha constituencies in 2004 and 2009, lost his seat in 2014.

He was one of the 23 leaders who wrote to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in 2020 seeking organisational changes. However, he backtracked saying the letter is being “misconstrued” and he has full faith in the top leadership.
